Dream Green MissionDream Green's mission is to reduce the dependence of fossil fuel in the Hawaiian Islands and set the lead for the world in renewable energy sources. The complete Mission Statement includes eco-tourism, eco-agriculture and eco-transportation as well. The Big Island of Hawaii is one of the best places on planet earth to harness renewable energy. According to HECO, "About 7% of the electricity sold to customers of Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and its subsidiaries, Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) and Maui Electric Company (MECO), comes from renewable energy resources, compared to the nationwide average of only 2%." In fact, Hawaii ranks third in the nation for renewable energy use as a percentage of total electricity production, according to the Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Annual 2006. However, the same [source] says, "More than 28% of the electricity sold on the Big Island came from renewable sources (1999 figures)." No doubt these figures have gone up.
It is important to remember that the cost of electricity in Hawaii is the highest in the nation according to the EIA and the State of Nebraska. Hawaii is the most oil-dependent of the 50 states with no natural fossil fuel resources and almost 90% of its energy derived from imported petroleum products – primarily oil according to the EIA.
Dream Green is a pending non profit organization for the purpose of reducing Hawaii's dependence on fossil fuel and to encourage green eco-tourism and eco-agriculture in Hawaii and make the Big Island of Hawaii the leader in renewable energy sources. Hydrogen produced by renewable sources without a carbon print is one of the priorities of this organization. This island could become 99% to 100% free from fossil fuels and rely instead on renewable energy. This requires a commitment from native Hawaiians and residents of the Big Island to change attitudes toward dependence upon fossil fuel and understand how renewable energy is abundant on the Big Island. Renewable energy from the Big Island could produce enough electricity for not only the Big Island but all the Hawaiian Islands.
The Big Island of Hawaii is unique in being one of the best places on planet earth to utilize renewable energy using wind, solar, waves, tidal power, geothermal, OTEC, BioMass and hydroelectric power. If the Big Island produced 100% of its electricity from renewable sources it would not have to rely on oil shipped in at all. If the Big Island could produce cheap clean renewable electricity it would attract industry to build plants here creating employment. Residents would benefit from cheaper electric bills.
With Project One hydrogen will be produced without a carbon footprint by using a wind turbine as renewable energy. Another possible project is to set up a wind farm on the South end of the Big Island of Hawaii with ONE HUNDRED (100) 3.5 MW windmills. This would be enough megawatts to run the entire Big Island of Hawaii. During peak wind speeds this wind farm could also produce Hydrogen through electrolysis to store for times when winds are not optimal and use the stored hydrogen to produce electricity when winds die down. Hydrogen could also be used for other purposes. Windfarm and hydrogen plant would produce employment for the Ka'u District on the Big Island which is sorely needed. There is plenty of land on the south end of the Big Island that could be used for a large wind farm. Getting the permission of the land owners, permits and funding for this project will take a huge amount of cooperation and work. This project will take millions of dollars and commitment from Big Island residents and changing our attitude upon dependence on fossil fuels for transportation, electricity and energy needs with a determined interest in using renewable energy based on a clean carbon footprint. Hawaii should take the lead in showing the world how a community of people can work together to demonstrate a clean spot on the planet. Dream Green. The Big Island of Hawaii has an enormous potential for geothermal renewable energy. According to EERE -PMC the Big Island of Hawaii uses less than 300 MW of electricity a day. The current Puna geothermal facility has a potential of producing 30 MW. This could be increased ten times and would be sufficient to provide the island with its current needs.Renewable Energy Diversification for a Hydrogen Economy
Hawaii should diversify alternative renewable energy from as many sources as possible. However, since geothermal and wind are in such plentiful supply, particularly on the Big Island, these should be encouraged even more so that a significant percentage of the energy produced for the Hawaiian Islands could be the primary source of electricity and fuel rather than the current dependence on fossil fuels. Solar, waves, tidal power, OTEC, and hydroelectric should be utilized to a lessor degree. BioMass should be used in a limited and controlled way as well. Hawaii could have such a huge amount of alternative renewable energy that it could be a leading producer of hydrogen, not only to be used to produce electricity, but also in fuel for transportation and to export for sales, thus setting an example to the world as a dream green come true. The opportunity for Hawaii to set the lead in relying on a clean, green, hydrogen economy is what Dream Green is all about. If you care to donate to this cause, your donation will be much appreciated. There is much work to do.
