Halema`uma`u is a powerful geothermal renewable energy source which should be tapped into. The Puna Geothermal project has been tapping into this rich source of heat since the 1960s. We should expand this energy source to not only make electricity for the entire Big Island but also the entire Hawaiian Islands by extending the lines under the ocean. This would make the Hawaiian Islands energy independent and not dependent upon fossil fuel. While Halema`uma`u in 2008 has produced a lot of vog for its residents of the islands by tapping into the powerful heat the residents would benefit from cheaper electricity and be a stimulus for industry to create jobs since there is a rich deposit of renewable energy potential right under the Big Island.
